Topical Finasteride is a prescription only medication in the UK which is sometimes used to treat hair loss. It works by inhibiting the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which plays a key role in hair loss. As such, Finasteride is particularly useful in androgenetic alopecia (female and male pattern baldness ) which causes receding hairline and thinning hair. By reducing DHT levels in the scalp, topical Finasteride can help to prevent hair thinning and promote regrowth.

In the UK, Finasteride tablets and topical treatments are available by prescription only. Generally, it is used to mainly treat male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) though not typically offered by the NHS. Finasteride in all its form is usually used in combination with other hair growth medications such as topical minoxidil solution to increase blood flow and treat thinning hair. Topical Finasteride can be a safe and effective treatment for certain types of hair loss but it is a prescription only medicine in the UK. It should only be used under the guidance of your doctor or prescribing healthcare provider.

Appropriate use of topical Finasteride in dermatology is generally safe but there is always a risk of side effects. Common side effects of topical Finasteride for hair loss include scalp irritation, itching or dryness. There may also be an initial period of further hair loss when starting treatment. It also carries the risk of allergic reaction.

In comparison to oral Finasteride, topical application lowers the risk of systemic side effects but does not rule them out. Side effects of Finasteride include sexual side effects such as decreased libido (sex drive), erectile dysfunction and reduced ejaculate volume. These effects can sometimes be long-lasting, even after discontinuing the medication. Other potential side effects include breast tenderness, discharge or enlargement (gynecomastia), testicular pain and an increased risk of high-grade prostate cancer. Some users may experience allergic reactions, such as rash, itching, or swelling, and psychological effects like depression and anxiety. Additionally, Finasteride can lower PSA levels, which may mask the diagnosis of prostate cancer. If you experience side effects, discontinue use and seek medical advice.

Although topical Finasteride for hair loss is usually safe when used appropriately, certain conditions need caution or avoidance:
